Ruth is a multi-award winning cultural producer and social entrepreneur. A former musician, she started a Manchester based record label at the age of twenty, then subverted the music industry through pioneering a music movement, Un-Convention, which brought people in the music infrastructure together across the world, to build new models and way of working – focussing on music as culture, rather than music as commerce.As CEO and Artistic Director of In Place of War, she has initiated new work, developed and implemented In Place of War’s strategic vision and connects the organisation to stakeholders from community to global level. Pioneering new projects including GRRRL, with women artists of colour to projects telling the story of climate change with scientists, musicians, cultural producers and indigenous artists (EarthSonic) to developing In Place of War’s #HackMusic education and funding programme.Ruth has developed relationships with 23 of the biggest music companies in the world who support the work of In Place of War, alongside Fellows including Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and Laurie Anderson.Ruth is also Honorary Research Fellow, University of Manchester; Visiting Scholar, Hip-Hop Education Center, New York; Cultural Ambassador, Somerset House, London; and Advisor at the Center For Music Ecosystems, USA, Advisor.
